100 Meters (TBC)

Kenji Iwaisawa’s existential sports anime transcends the primal thrill of racing the 100-meter sprint to discuss the philosophy of momentum.

Adapted from Uoto’s five-volume manga, the film follows gifted runner Togashi (Matsuzaka Tori) through middle school, high school, and adulthood. While Togashi’s friendships, rivalries, and outlook on running change between each era, the one constant is that he’s always overshadowed by Komiya (Sometani Shôta), an unorthodox competitor who runs like his life depends on it.

100 Meters alternates between stillness and all-out adrenaline in style and Iwaisawa daringly uses just about every technique at his disposal, blending rotoscoping for naturalistic movement, 2D character animation for expressiveness, all against highly detailed 3D backgrounds.
