Amos Gitai: House Film Programme

A black and white picture of a house in Jerusalem.

This film programme, alongside Barbican Theatre production House, presents Amos Gitai’s documentary trilogy on the multiple narratives which cross ways under the same roof of a West Jerusalem house.

Stories of displacement, migration and the longing for home make this trilogy a poignant account of memory, identity and the long-lasting impact of the Israeli Palestinian conflict on people’s lives and livelihood.

“Twenty-five years ago I began a film, House, by observing the (re)construction of a house in West Jerusalem as a metaphor for the city and its inhabitants - mostly Palestinians and Israelis. In this first film, the house was a sort of human archaeological site... A House in Jerusalem... the focus was extended, shifted right and left, up and down towards the house's neighbours and the sites buried below the earth's surface. In News from Home / News from House I wanted to widen the perimeters of my observation to the Palestinian Diaspora, to those links to the original inhabitants of the house by their family history.” Gitai 2005

"Gitai wants this house to become something very symbolic and very concrete at the same time, to become a character. He achieves one of the most beautiful things that cinema can do: people looking at the same thing and seeing different things. And that vision moves them." Serge Daney, Libération, 1 March 1982
