Oramo conducts Strauss and Wagner

BBC Symphony Orchestra/Sakari Oramo

Ilya Gringolts

Glowing colours and grand passions: Sakari Oramo and the BBC Symphony Orchestra join violinist Ilya Gringolts in Szymanowski’s gorgeous concerto – plus music by Wagner, Strauss and Dora Pejačević.

Revolutions aren’t always noisy – and as the world around them broke up in war and turmoil, Dora Pejačević and Karol Szymanowski let their imaginations soar, creating beauty that still thrills and ravishes today. The young Strauss pictures eternity, and Richard Wagner writes a wordless poem to the love of his life: music so intimate that it almost feels as if we shouldn’t be listening.

We’re also thrilled to welcome back the virtuoso violinist (and former BBC New Generation Artist) Ilya Gringolts. His playing has been described as 'luminous': it should be perfect for Szymanowski’s sensuous, shimmering Concerto.

This performance will finish at approximately 9.15pm.
