Mariza

Photo of Fado singer-songwriter Mariza

Portuguese fado singer Mariza brings her charismatic stage presence and powerful blend of traditional and contemporary song forms to the Hall.

Through a 20-year journey that began as a local Lisbon phenomenon, Mariza has gone on to become a global icon. A true ambassador of Fado, she has taken it along new and daring paths. Her repertoire, while remaining anchored in classical & contemporary fado, has expanded to include Cape Verdean mornas, Rhythm & Blues classics and the musical flavours of Brazil, Spain and Mozambique.

Mariza has taken fado to some of the world’s greatest stages and she has collaborated with musicians including Jaques Morelenbaum, John Mauceri, José Merce, Gilberto Gil, Ivan Lins, Lenny Kravitz, Sting, Cesária Évora and Tito Paris.

It is said that no fado singer can ever be a true fado singer until they tackle the classics and make them their own. Mariza continues to prove herself as fado’s great voice as she builds something new from fado’s tradition.
