Conclave (12A) + ScreenTalk with director Edward Berger

ScreenTalk

We are thrilled to welcome director Edward Berger (All Quiet on the Western Front) who will be live onstage, in conversation with Barbican New Release Cinema Curator Sonia Zadurian after the film.

As news spreads that the pope has passed away, his old friend Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) is swiftly charged with leading the sacred event to select a new pope. As cardinals from around the world, including Cardinal Bellini (Stanley Tucci) and Cardinal Tremblay (John Lithgow), gather to participate in the election process, a mystery begins to unfold. Soon, Lawrence finds himself at the centre of a scandal that threatens to tear apart the very fabric of the Catholic Church.

This taught thriller is expertly written and directed, full of twists and turns, as well as all the plotting and intrigue you’d expect from a first-class mystery. The ensemble cast are fantastic, with Fiennes, Tucci and Lithgow all on top form and joined by Lucian Msamati, Isabella Rossellini and Carlos Diehz among others. Absolutely captivating and unmissable.
