The Blue Caftan (12A)

SAFAR

Still from The Blue Caftan

In Salé, Morocco, the arrival of a young apprentice causes a ripple in a couple's relationship, in Maryam Touzani's melancholic queer drama.

Halim and Mina run a traditional caftan store in one of Morocco’s oldest medinas. In order to keep up with the commands of the demanding customers, they hire Youssef. The talented apprentice shows an utmost dedication in learning the art of embroidery and tailoring from Halim. Slowly Mina realizes how much her husband is moved by the presence of the young man.

Maryam Touzani’s poignant and delicate second feature The Blue Caftan won the International Critics' Prize at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, the top prize for International Feature at New York's Newfest, and was shortlisted for Best International Feature Film at the 2023 Academy Awards.

Presented as part of SAFAR’s Spotlight on Morocco strand, showcasing a cinema not shying away from exploring queerness, classism and segregation.
