Carla Simón’s Spanish award-winning film paints a tender portrait of a family of peach farmers fighting to keep their ancestral land in rural Catalonia.
In a small Catalonian village, the peach farmers of the Solé family spend every summer together picking fruit from their orchard. But when plans arise to install solar panels and cut down trees, the members of this tight-knit group suddenly face eviction — and the loss of far more than their home.
Winner of the Golden Bear award at Berlin International Film Festival, Carla Simón’s sophomore feature was entered as this year’s Spanish entry for Best International Film at the Academy Awards. Featuring an ensemble of entirely non-professional actors, Alcarràs is a warm, earnest, and beautifully-observed portrait of a family bonded by their love for their ancestral land and their determination to hold onto it.
