The Quiet Girl (12A)

Oscar Week 2023

Oscar Week 2023: The Quiet Girl

Nominated for Best International Feature Film - The Quiet Girl is the heart-breaking Irish debut feature from director Colm Bairéad.

Set in the gorgeous landscapes of rural Ireland in the early 80s, Cait is a quiet, isolated girl who is sent away from her overcrowded, dysfunctional family to live with foster parents for the Summer. She blossoms in their care, but in a house where there are meant to be no secrets, she discovers some painful truths.

Adapted from Claire Keegan’s acclaimed short story Foster, Colm Bairéad’s Irish-language film is beautifully understated in both its visual style and the subtlety of narrative, yet carefully constructed and considered in its delicate storytelling. At its heart lies an astonishing performance by newcomer Catherine Clinch. She quietly draws us into Cait’s world, her gestures allowing us to witness the lives of adults through her innocent yet understanding eyes.
