L'immensità (12A)

Members' Screening

A mother handstands over her teenage child who holds a rose in their teeth, as they smile at each other

Emanuele Crialese’s 70s Italian drama sees Penélope Cruz guiding her family through the desires, displacement and discomfort that she too faces; where fantasies alleviate realities.

Emanuele Crialese (Terraferma, Respiro) brings his latest title to Venise, with Penélope Cruz as the mother of a young family trying to guide her children through their childhoods and navigate her own rocky adulthood at the same time.

Crialese tackles the conservative attitudes towards gender roles in 70s Europe with a humanity and awareness, as mother battles with her rigid place in society whilst trying to support her child through their own journey of belonging and discovery.

Featuring tender moments, touching fantasy, and a delicious amount of Italo-pop, L'immensità takes you back to the days of records in the living room, pyschedelic prints and the questions we would ask our parents when we were young enough to be bold enough, without realising the consequences of the answers.
