Imagine The Sound (12*) + Introduction by Stewart Lee

Jazz on Screen

A film reel of men playing jazz instruments

A documentary that delves deep into the lives and artistry of four iconic figures – Cecil Taylor, Archie Shepp, Bill Dixon, and Paul Bley, exploring their contribution to the free jazz movement.

Directed by Ron Mann, Imagine the Sound takes us on an intimate journey, exploring the creative processes, philosophies, and groundbreaking contributions of these trailblazing musicians. Their stories are woven together through candid interviews, rare footage, and, of course, their groundbreaking performances.

The documentary not only provides an insightful glimpse into the evolution of jazz music but also showcases the power of artistic expression to transcend boundaries and reshape our perceptions. Cecil Taylor's dynamic pianism, Archie Shepp's soul-stirring saxophone, Bill Dixon's avant-garde trumpet, and Paul Bley's exploratory piano – each artist's unique voice is a testament to the boundless possibilities of jazz.
