The Five Devils (15)

Glasgow Film Festival

Still from Five Devils

Adèle Exarchopoulos embraces love in the dark in Léa Mysius’s deliciously beguiling drama about family secrets and queer romance.

Eight-year-old Vicky has a mysterious gift: she can recreate any scent she comes across, even that of her beloved mother Joanne. When Vicky’s estranged aunt suddenly returns to their mountain town, the invocation of her fragrance plunges the young girl back in time to unravel the mystery of Joanne’s fiery past with her now sister-in-law.

Directed and written by Léa Mysius, who previously collaborated with Claire Denis as screenwriter for Stars At Noon, and starring Palme d’Or winner Adèle Exarchopoulos (Blue Is The Warmest Colour, Passages) The Five Devils forges a witchy and elemental fable out of small-town racism, homophobia and the ways in which we manage to contain — for a time — memories of the past.

The Five Devils is presented with Glasgow Film Festival 2023. You can find out more about GFF by visiting their website here.
