DJ Mixing Workshop (Intermediate) with Sisu

Members' Event

The Sisu DJ collective crew, 17 people stood together in a white room.

Improve your mixing skills at this intermediate DJ workshop hosted in collaboration with DJ collective Sisu.

Got the very basics of DJing down and want to improve your practice? Join us for our next workshop with DJ collective Sisu, a community providing a platform to educate, inspire and showcase aspiring female and non-binary DJs and producers.

Sisu founder Malissa and DJ Sita Shah will teach you about beat-matching and phrase mixing techniques, how to mix in key and to incorporate FX. You'll also learn how to record your mixes and analyse your performance so you can leave with an awareness of how to develop your practice on your own.

Sisu are passionate about diversifying the music industry and empowering those who are underrepresented amongst DJs. Whilst this event is open to everyone, we strongly encourage those who identify as women or non-binary to join this workshop and will aim to ensure at least 50% of tickets go to this group.

You don't have to have attended our first session to join this workshop. We welcome anyone who knows a bit about mixing - you don't have to have been learning for a long time. Look out for future advanced-level sessions which we'll be announcing soon. Plus, enjoy an evening of live mixing, drinks and networking in the Lounge at a later date.

Tickets are very limited for this event, to allow for everyone to have maximum amount of time on the decks. You can bring a maximum of one guest for this event, they must have their own ticket. A restricted capacity of tickets is available to Young Barbican.

The workshop will run for approximately 2.5 hours from 6.30-9pm.

All equipment will be provided but if you have a USB with your music feel free to bring it.

Malissa is the founder of Sisu. The Liverpool-born selector has played on a plethora of line-ups across Europe - whether it be alongside Plaid and Kelly Lee Owens in Southbank’s Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, in Germany at Nation of Gondwana festival alongside the likes of Anetha and Freddy K, or warming up at Berlin’s Paloma Bar with Dusk/Blackdown. Flying through 2022, sharing stages with the likes of Mafalda, Dan Shake, Skream, CCL and Jerome Hill.

With a mix showcased on RA as mix of the Day in April 2023 you can wrap your ears around some of her recent audio journeys. Previous editorial/radio coverage of Malissa can be found on the likes of Mantissa and Rinse France.

Sita Shah

Sita Shah is a DJ and Creative who’s been making waves in the London scene. She’s a member of the Daytimers and Sisu collectives and resident DJ at techno night Makaan. Sita demonstrates a different way of navigating the familiar techno zone, going fast and furious with a crate of self-styled “desi techno”.

Think four-to-the-floor mixed with M.I.A edits, tricked-out Bollywood songs and bhangra basslines going 100 miles an hour. She’s part of a new generation of nails-hard practitioners who are taking techno in subtly fresh directions. If you’ve seen Sita live you’ll know she brings the energy behind the decks. And if you’re new to discovering her sound, check out her FOLD Detect and HÖR Berlin sets that bring to life her signature style.
