A woman feeds a young man water in a still from 1976

Haunting and elegant in equal measures, Manuela Martelli's directorial debut immerses us in the oppressive landscape of 1970s Chile.

In the coastal Chilean town of Las Cruces, a woman's life metamorphosizes when she is asked by the local priest to care for a young criminal. Spending the winter redecorating their family beach house, Carmen (Aline Küppenheim) finds herself reusing her old skills as a nurse to care for a wounded young man, Elías (Nicolás Sepúlveda), being kept in hiding by the local priest (Hugo Medina). Quickly, she realises that her caring nature could be the cause of great harm.

Tension seeps into all aspects of actor-turned-director Manuela Martelli's first feature, from the sound design to the cinematography to the performances, in an unexpected gem of a character study, that interrogates the dictatorship era of South America.
