UK Premiere: On the Divide (15) (LC) + Pre-recorded ScreenTalk (Online)

Human Rights Watch Film Festival

A young woman in a still from On the Divide

As millions of Americans stand to lose their access to abortion, communities of colour and low-income will be most impacted

Telling the story of Whole Women’s Health, the last remaining abortion clinic on the US-Mexico border, On The Divide breaks away from politics to show all sides of the story: the clinic’s security guard Rey, a fervent Catholic in his late 60s; Denisse, a young mother of four who volunteers as a clinic escort; Mercedes, an ex-gang member and mother now part of the pro-life Church movement; and other members of the Latinx community who find themselves in the “grey area” of the national debate. Filmmakers Maya Cueva & Leah Galant demonstrate how people who once held rigid beliefs can change and what choice and survival really look like for those most affected.

ScreenTalk with filmmakers Maya Cueva & Leah Galant, film participant Denisse, & Amanda Klasing, Associate Director, Women's Rights, HRW. Moderator Joaquin Ortiz, MOPA San Diego.
