A Chiara (15)

A Chiara

Award-winning filmmaker Jonas Carpignano explores the meaning of family in this gritty neorealist Italian drama that tells the coming-of-age story of a girl grappling with the sins of her father.

In an astonishing central performance, Swamy Rotolo plays Chiara, the 15-year-old daughter of an affluent family whose ties to the local mafia underworld start to become clear after a shocking revelation.

The third in his loosely-connected ‘Calabrian trilogy’ (following Mediterranea and A Ciambra), Carpignano’s latest continues his exploration of the poverty and crime that shapes the social fabric of the small-town community of Gioia Tauro.

Winner of the Europa Cinemas Label prize for best European film, in the Cannes 2021 Directors’ Fortnight.
