Tove (12A)

Alma Pöysti as Moomin's creator, in bed and laughing with Krista Kosonen as Vivica Bandler, in the biopic Tove

The unconventional life of artist and Moomins creator Tove Jansson is told with panache and a great performance by Alma Pöysti at its heart, in this new biopic from Finnish filmmaker Zaida Bergroth.

Beginning in a rubble-strewn Helsinki in 1944, we follow Jansson’s journey to becoming a respected artist and a woman confident in her queer identity.

Pöysti conveys Jansson’s natural, radiant optimism brilliantly, even as she works for recognition outside of her sculptor father’s shadow and the initial lack of attention on any of her work outside of the commercially successful Moomins. Beautifully explored are her relationships, both with the shy suitor Atos Wirtanen (Shanti Roney), and firebrand Vivica Bandler (Krista Kosonen), the latter of whom is love-of-your-life important, but too wed to freedom to truly stay still for Jansson’s sake.

Bergroth’s classy, often understanded biopic does her subject great justice, and proves there’s much more than Moomins to be found here.
