The Many Saints of Newark (15) (AD)

A still from The Many Saints of Newark, a family gathers around a table

Set 30 years before Tony Soprano’s first therapy session, this riveting new drama from The Sopranos writer David Chase gives us a crucial part of the history of the DiMeo crime family.

Young Tony (Michael Gandolfini) is growing up during a tumultuous time in New Jersey, as the DiMeo family (of which he is part) must up the ante to keep their control over the city.

At the head and heart of the family is Dickie Moltisanti (a terrific Alessandro Nivola): son of the even more fearsome ‘Hollywood Dick’ Moltisanti (Ray Liotta) and father to baby Christopher.

Dickie’s influence over Tony is profound, both as a charismatic inspiration and surrogate father, while Tony's own father Johnny (Jon Bernthal) languishes in prison – through this, we discover part of the reason why Tony Soprano became Tony Soprano.

Also starring Leslie Odom Jr, Vera Farmiga and Corey Stoll, this crime story offers something a little different to the Sopranos series, but is a richly detailed portrait of a family and its fate.
