The Man Who Sold His Skin (15)

A still from The Man Who Sold His Skin, a man with a naked torso stands facing a large audience in a grand room

Syrian refugee Sam Ali (Yahya Mahayni) makes an outrageous deal to be reunited with his love, in this wry satire from director Kaouther Ben Hania.

After a misunderstanding means Sam must make haste to Beirut, he becomes separated from the beautiful and somewhat unattainable Abeer (Dea Liane). To get back to her, he agrees to a request from artist Jeffrey Godefroi (Koen de Bouw): get tattooed with a Schengen visa on your back, and it might be possible to reunite with Abeer. Instead, Sam is taken from gallery to gallery by the sharp art dealer Soraya (Monica Bellucci), like a piece of living art.

Raising a cynical eyebrow at the world of modern art and how human tragedy is commodified, this lively story is full of charismatic performances that makes its unlikely premise work brilliantly.
