Meet the Maker Demonstration Weekend

Part of London Craft Week

LCW Demonstration Weekend at the Barbican

Visit the Barbican Shop and meet Jamie Temple, Daniela Rubino and Lauren Wilson, who are giving demonstrations of their work in-store.

Jamie demonstrates the process employed to create his recent large-scale abstracted landscape-inspired prints, taking you through the stages of building up layers of painted textures and printed lino blocks.

Daniela and Lauren demonstrate the process of making terrazzo-effect items using Eco Resin, showing how to mix and add pigment to resin, sanding and finishing. The material is a versatile gypsum-based resin; it is non-toxic, making it safe to work with.

The demonstrations take place over the weekend of the 9 October (Jamie Temple) and 10 October (Daniela Rubino and Lauren Wilson), and are held in the Barbican Shop.

Daniela Rubino and Lauren Wilson - Terrazzo Demo

The history of terrazzo can be traced back to the ancient mosaics of Egypt and has recently seen a resurgence in modern design. We will demonstrates how to cast a small terrazzo vase using Eco Resin. We will design a colour palette, mix and add pigment to the resin and cast into a pre-made mould. Then we will sand and seal the vase. The material is a versatile gypsum based resin, it is non-toxic making it safe to work with.

Daniela Rubino and Lauren Wilson have a background in Sculpture. They have combined experience working in foundries, wood and metal workshops, where they gained specialist skills in casting, mould-making, welding and furniture making. Rubino Wilson have tutored at various institutions working with adults and children.

They are currently developing a mentoring scheme for teenage girls and the LGBTQIA+ community to learn workshop practice in a professional, non discriminatory environment. Unlearning workshop prejudice is at the core of the project.

Jamie Temple - Print Demo

Jamie will be demonstrating the process employed to create his recent large scale abstracted landscape inspired prints, taking us through the stages of building up layers of painted textures and printed lino blocks.

The process starts by mixing inks and using various rollers to apply them directly to paper, creating an abstract base layer of texture and colour. Over these multiple blocks of carved and broken lino are then hand printed, combining to create unique one off prints inspired by landscapes, the environment and all the unseen particulate matter flowing around us.

Jamie is an artist and printmaker whose practice is rooted in printmaking and woodworking from which he creates architectural and landscape inspired works on paper and site specific installations. His work draws from a fascination with the built and natural environments we inhabit and transform, taking inspiration from architecture, landscapes and the planetary and social systems and structures in which we exist.
