Martin Eden (15)

Luca Marinelli stands in muted clothes in front of people and red flags in a field in the film Martin Eden

A story about class, justice and impossible romance, rising star Luca Marinelli is the titular hero of this Jack London adaptation, relocated to a bustling Naples.

Martin is a sailor and born fighter. After rescuing a teenager from a bully, he goes on to meet the boy’s well-to-do family, including his sister Elena (Jessica Cressy), to whom Martin has an immediate attraction. Determined to better himself, Martin begins his education, leading to a fervent passion for writing and eventually, fame and fortune as an author.

Shot on 16mm and shown in gorgeous colour, Pietro Marcello’s adaption is an epic exploration of both cinematic and political history, as restless as its central character. Untied to a particular time, mixing its music, props and costumes from different eras, the film brings home the point that the big questions, about life and how we should live it, never really go away.
