Annette (15)

Adam Driver wears a black motorcycle helmet with his nose to Marion Cotillard, who is holding a bunch of flowers, in Leos Carax's Annette

Marion Cotillard and Adam Driver star in this bizarre musical extravaganza, with a script and music from the band Sparks, and directed by Leos Carax (Holy Motors).

Ann Defrasnoux (Cotillard) and Henry McHenry (Driver) are an unlikely couple; she’s a pure-of-voice opera star and queen of highbrow culture, while Henry’s a self-styled bad boy of comedy, complete with a six pack, a motorbike and cynical persona. Their mismatched love creates a child: Annette, who turns out to be a little wooden puppet. Eventually, it ends in tears, with Henry self-destructing in spectacular fashion.

Shockingly beautiful, sexy, strange and darkly comic, Carax’s melodramatic take on a dynamic romance brings all sorts of interesting questions out of the story about life and art, leaving realism aside to get to some sort of essential truth. It's clear from the beginning, as Ron and Russell Mael, Carax and his daughter all singing the opening number on the streets of LA: So May We Start? that this is no ordinary musical.
