Featuring Christian Tetzlaff & Joyce DiDonato

Mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato

Triple threat: when mezzo Joyce DiDonato, violinist Christian Tetzlaff and maestro Sir Antonio Pappano are in the same concert, what more is there to say?

Joyce DiDonato sings the exquisite, belle-époque melodies of Henri Duparc. Christian Tetzlaff – the subject of our Artist Portrait this season – plays Szymanowski’s shimmering First Violin Concerto. And to top it all, Sir Antonio Pappano conducts stirring, luminous orchestral showpieces by Liszt and Martinů.

It’s the sign of a truly great artist that they’re not content to stick to familiar music – they’re always driven to explore. The radiant voice and keen emotional intelligence that make DiDonato so thrilling in Handel operas will take her straight to the heart of Duparc’s lovely songs. Tetzlaff’s needle-point virtuosity is exactly what’s needed in music as sensuous as Szymanowski. And Martinů’s vibrant Frescoes might just be the most joyous symphony he never wrote.

The performance is expected to finish around 9.30pm, including a 20 minute interval.
