Ian Bostridge & Dame Sarah Connolly

Live from the Barbican

Ian Bostridge and Dame Sarah Connolly in front of a Barbican tower

Two of Britain’s top singers are joined by leading accompanist Julius Drake and the sublime Carducci Quartet for a chamber concert reflecting on themes of love, loss, nature and nostalgia.

Chausson’s beautiful song cycle Poeme de l’amour et de lar mer is a revealing companion to Vaughan William’s quintessentially English pastoral idyll, On Wenlock Edge. A melting pot of musical ideas and influences, beneath Chausson’s sophisticated French polish you can pick out the romantic influence of Wagner and Berlioz, and early hints of the intoxicating impressionist style Debussy would go on to define.

What they share is dramatic scope and an almost operatic intensity; perfect for tonight’s performers, who were hand-picked by Sir Antonio Pappano. Unfortunately Pappano has had to withdraw from this performance due to travel restrictions, but we are grateful to Julius Drake for stepping in at short notice.

Under new guidelines, we’ve fewer available seats in our venues and thoroughly clean between performances. You can only sit in the same seating cluster as someone from your own household (or support bubble) and we ask you to not swap seats so we can maintain a safe distance between you and other groups.

Tickets must be booked online in advance. Tickets to watch the concert online from your home are only available until the event begins.
