Styx (12A)

A woman in a grey top on the radio of her boat.

Pitting privilege and personal responsibility against one woman's physical limits, Styx is a visceral thriller about a sailor confronted with a sinking ship of refugees.

Both a moving parable of the refugee crisis and masterclass in cinematic intensity, German ER doctor Rike (played almost wordlessly but potently by Susanne Wolff) finds herself in an unthinkable ethical dilemma.

Wolfgang Fischer’s film depicts a struggle for survival at sea that evolves into an allegorical, existential drama, raising questions of the lines between empathy and cruelty.
