Red Joan (12A)

Judi Dench in Red Joan

Based on an extraordinary real life case, Judi Dench is the seemingly unremarkable pensioner arrested for a past of trading secrets to the KGB.

Seduced in her youth by the glamour of a Russian emigré and her radical brother (Victoria's Tom Hughes), Joan Stanley (played across ages by Dench and Kingsman's Sophie Cookson) finds herself at the very heart of the Cold War – caught between patriotism and idealism, love and duty, courage and betrayal.

Theatre veteran Sir Trevor Nunn's first cinematic directing effort in over a decade, with a crisply structured script by Lindsay ShaperoRed Joan is the story of a woman who spent a lifetime being underestimated while quietly changing the course of history.
