Don't Get Trouble in Your Mind: The Carolina Chocolate Drops' Story (12A*)

Part of Doc'n Roll/EFG London Jazz Festival

the Carolina Chocolate Drops trio from behind, as they walk with their instruments in a field

The story of the North Carolina trio who refashioned a nineteenth-century musical style for twenty-first century listeners.

Dom Flemons, Rhiannon Giddens and Justin Robinson came together in 2005 to form the Carolina Chocolate Drops. Collectively, they were inspired to revive the black string band tradition, under the mentorship of one its elderly survivors, Joe Thomson, then aged 87.

This documentary charts the band’s meteoric rise, from busking on the streets to playing to sell-out crowds at festivals around world, and their win at the 2010 Grammys. In its final section, it offers candid insights into the tensions and artistic differences that developed within the tightly-knit group, leading to Robinson’s eventual departure.
