Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde

BBC Symphony Orchestra/Oramo

Sakari Oramo conducting on stage emotion

The nimble, Classical wit of Mozart’s Symphony No 35 is here set against the expansive sensuality and Romantic richness of Mahler’s great orchestral song-cycle Das Lied von der Erde.

The vibrant colours and heady, perfumed atmosphere of ancient Chinese poems are captured in all their richness by Mahler’s thickly-scored Das Lied von der Erde. Two star singers – tenor Stuart Skelton and mezzo Elisabeth Kulman, both regular BBC Symphony Orchestra collaborators – join as soloists. Music director Sakari Oramo will also conduct a pared-back BBCSO in Mozart’s exhilarating Symphony No 35 ‘Haffner’, it’s bubbling, buffa style a contrast to the restless musical introspection of Thomas Larcher’s Nocturne Insomnia – the second of three Larcher performances this season.
