After the Wave: Young French Cinema in the 1970s

Photo of young man holding weights

From one of the brightest stars of 70s French cinema, this tender coming-of-age tale is based on the director’s own childhood.

Daniel is being raised by his kindly grandma in rural France when his mother, based in the provincial city of Narbonne, decides to take him back into her care. An excellent student, Daniel expects to continue at school; but money is tight at home, and he must instead apprentice to a local mechanic and earn his keep.

Forming the core of the film are Daniel’s realisation of his straightened circumstances and his attempts to fit in with the other local working-class lads. This includes, of course, being a success with the ladies: his confused responses to girls – including a clumsy attempt at seduction in the cinema – are empathetically observed, but never sentimental.
