The Wild Pear Tree (15)

The Wild Pear Tree

Nuri Bilge Ceylan follows his Palme d’Or-winning Winter Sleep with an engrossing portrait of a young writer at odds with his hometown and family.

Sinan returns from his studies in the city of Çanakkale to his parents’ home in the small rural town of Çan. There he finds his father Idris has developed a gambling addiction, often leaving his mother and sister without food or electricity. He finds his hometown provincial, and interactions with his family and old friends reveal a disconnect between his ambitions and his roots.

Dreading he’ll be sent to teach way out east following military service, Sinan seeks funds to publish a book of his essays and stories – but will anyone in Can recognise his talent?
