Christmas in Leipzig

Solomon's Knot

JS Bach’s Magnificat in E flat is given context by the music of Kuhnau and Schelle, his two preceding cantors in Leipzig.

The programme demonstrates the connection between JS Bach and his two predecessors. Bach based the general shape of his Magnificat on that of Kuhnau’s, and it was first performed in 1723, the year Bach took over as cantor in Leipzig after Kuhnau’s death. The short Schelle piece provides a rousing advent introduction.

Solomon’s Knot’s singers all sing from memory; and have no conductor.  There will be very direct communication with the audience. This concert will be Solomon’s Knot’s second ever appearance at the Barbican, following their 5* (The Times) performance in Bach weekend in June 2018.
