Redoubtable (15)

Michel Hazanavicius's take on Jean Luc Godard's political awakening

Oscar-winning Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist) offers a vivid and entertaining drama about the French New Wave posterchild, Jean-Luc Godard.

The year is 1968 and Jean-Luc Godard (Louis Garrel) is already a New Wave icon. He hates his friends because of their middle-class lifestyle while at the same time idealising the young students on the barricades – a glorification that is not reciprocated.

In the midst of an existential crisis, he meets 17-year old actress Anne Wiazemsky (Stacy Martin) during the making of one of his films, and falls in love. With a light hand – and much humor – Hazanavicius depicts the imploding relationship between Wiazemsky and Godard through elegant, cinematic passes at Godard’s films.

Based on an autobiographical novel by Wiazemsky, Redoubtable is everything but a devoted portrait of 'the great artist', but is rather an entertaining biopic spiced with a wonderful, French cast (Bérénice Bejo, Grégory Gadebois and others).
