On Chesil Beach (15)

On Chesil Beach

Saoirse Ronan and Billy Howle are brilliant as a young couple going through one hell of a wedding night, in this new adaptation of Ian McEwan’s novel.

Edward and Florence are made for each other. It is true that they come from different class backgrounds in 1960s England, but that doesn’t matter – everything falls into place when they are together.

Up until their wedding night, that is, when the nervous couple eat dinner in the hotel room on Chesil Beach, sitting at the table, a short distance away from the threatening double bed.

The debuting Dominic Cooke offers a heart-rending, beautiful, warm and sombre film about words, misunderstandings, and the choice between keeping quiet about something or uttering words that could change an entire life.
