Heiresses

A quietly unfurling masterpiece centred on the life of two women from wealthy families in Asunción, Paraguay, as their lives unravel.

Both a piercing character study and a commentary on the Paraguayan class structure, The Heiresses follows Chela (Ana Brun) and Chiquita (Margarita Iru), two women from wealthy families whose financial situation has worsened and they begin selling off their inherited possessions. After being together for over 30 years, their precarious financial situation begins to impact both their way of life and their relationship.

Forced to face life on her own, Chela starts driving for the first time, providing a local taxi service to a group of elderly wealthy ladies. Encountering the much young Angy (Ana Ivanova), they forge a fresh and exhilarating connection – captured with a finely-crafted tenderness from debut director Marcelo Martinessi.

Paraguay 2018 Dir Marcelo Martinessi 95 min

‘A finely-crafted, beautifully realised debut that exquisitely balances character study with shrewd commentary on class, desire and the lingering privileges of Paraguay's elite‘
