Ellen Nisbeth (viola)

ECHO Rising Stars

A headshot of Ellen Nisbeth

The young Swedish viola player Ellen Nisbeth explores the romantic soul of her instrument, in music by Vaughan Williams, Kaija Saariaho and Rebecca Clarke.

The viola is sometimes called the Cinderella of the string instruments. But with a programme that includes Vaughan Williams’ neglected Romance and the sweeping passion of the superb Viola Sonata by Rebecca Clarke, Ellen Nisbeth will take it to the ball tonight.

Nisbeth has a special empathy for British repertoire, though with music by Saariaho and Katarina Leyman too, this beautifully-conceived programme reveals her as more than just a romantic. When Nisbeth won the Nordic Soloist Prize in 2013, the jury acclaimed her ‘sensational musicality’. Working in partnership with one of Scandinavia’s supreme chamber musicians, Bengt Forsberg, this ECHO recital is a chance to discover a truly individual young artist.
