Barber, Ravel, Walker and Mussorgsky

BBC Symphony Orchestra/Feddeck

A picture of Javier Perianes playing the piano

Maurice Ravel as masterly composer and imaginative orchestrator alongside a UK premiere by George Walker and Barber’s expressive First Symphony.

Maurice Ravel’s sparkling Piano Concerto, played by BBC SO favourite, the Spaniard Javier Perianes, sits alongside one of the greatest of all orchestrations – Ravel’s now heard more often than Mussorgsky’s piano original. Also on the programme, Barber’s early and highly expressive First Symphony and Pulitzer Prize-winning George Walker’s Icarus in Orbit, a work by a composer in his mid-nineties, and an alumnus of the same college, the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, as tonight’s conductor James Feddeck, making his BBC SO/Barbican debut.
