BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert: Michael Collins/Heath Quartet

Michael Collins & Friends

British clarinettist Michael Collins partners with the Heath String Quartet for one work each by Howells and Brahms.

Brahms’ Clarinet Quintet is distinctly his own. Written shortly before his premature retirement, this is Brahms at his peak. And this work manages to balance his own personality – out in force – with a subtle homage to a predecessor written by Mozart. Just like his model, the final movement is a lively theme and variations to bring this grand chamber work, dedicated to Brahms’ friend Richard Mühlfeld, to a close.

Recorded for future broadcast on BBC Radio 3 on 25 May 2018
