The Stolen Death (PG*)

Part of Finland: Independence Day season

film still from The Stolen Death

This poetic thriller depicts the underground resistance of a Helsinki activist group against the Tsarist government of the early 1900's.

The main emphasis isn't on conveying the plot, but rather on setting the atmosphere, all the way to the beautifully melodramatic ending.

The leading roles are played by the charming Tuulikki Paananen, who later moved to the United States (and appeared in Jacques Tourneur’s The Leopard Man), and 'Ilmari Mänty', later known as Finnish Ambassador Ralph Enckell.

What's more, sadly the director Nyrki Tapiovaara was killed in the Winter War at the young age of 28.

Finland 1938 Dir Nyrki Tapiovaara 86 min
