Chasing Trane (PG*)

EFG London Jazz Festival 2017

Film still from Chasing Trane

A definitive ode to the life of jazz genius John Coltrane. His extraordinary talent and his struggles, are remembered by his family, famous peers and in his own words as narrated by Denzel Washington.

The legendary saxophonist’s story is brought to the screen in this through-provoking and uplifting documentary for anyone who appreciates the power of music or who would like to know more about one of jazz’s most enigmatic figures.

The documentary spans from his childhood in North Carolina, where he picked up a saxophone at age 13, to breakout performances with the Miles Davis Quintet and Thelonious Monk. The film also explores his struggle with addiction and the recovery that led to his astonishing solo career. Set against the social and political landscapes in America the film brings the musician to life as a complex artist whose music both responded and transcendent the turbulent times.
