Barbican announces Colin Stetson and London Contemporary Orchestra performing Hereditary in 2024

Colin Stetson

Colin Stetson: Hereditary + London Contemporary Orchestra
Thu 25 April 2024, Barbican Hall, 7.30pm

Tickets from £25 plus booking fee

Canadian-American saxophonist Colin Stetson, in his Barbican Hall debut, joins forces with the London Contemporary Orchestra for a special performance of live selections from his acclaimed soundtrack to the A24 horror masterpiece, Hereditary, marking the world premiere of the show.

Operating in a field of his own, Stetson has gained a well-deserved reputation as an exceptional musician. Having collaborated with the likes of Lou Reed, LCD Soundsystem, The National, Chemical Brothers and Bon Iver, Stetson is known for assertive, powerhouse performances on the saxophone – chiefly bass and alto, but also soprano, tenor and baritone. He has developed signature characteristics by having an unconventional approach to his instruments which includes everlasting drones, circular breathing, and manipulating his instrument's acoustic tones.

For this special performance, Stetson performs alongside the LCO to present selections from the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack for director Ari Aster’s chilling feature film.

“Stetson’s soundtrack is loaded with tension and possessed by a certain fiendishness, and as an independent listen feels like the tug of an invisible force, malicious hands clasping at shoulders, rattling door-knobs and clutching corners, guiding the fates of a series of characters named in titles but faceless except for the sounds emitted. Stetson’s music, which includes an extensive solo and collaborative catalog ranging from classical to avant-garde to metal, has always been capable of conjuring worlds, and the cavernous hallways, creaking stairwells and dimly lit hearths that this soundtrack evokes have a haunting allure in and of themselves.” - Northern Transmissions on ‘Heredtiary’

NB. This concert performance does not include a screening of the film but will be accompanied by a special light show featuring stills from each of the suites of the score.

Produced by the Barbican in association with Baba Yaga’s Hut
