LSO Singing Day: Immortal Bach

LSO Singing Day

Join the LSO Choral Director Simon Halsey to spend a day singing music by JS Bach’s and the composers he inspired.

Join the LSO Choral Director Simon Halsey to spend a day singing movements from JS Bach’s Magnificat and pieces by Mendelssohn, Rutter and Nystedt with roots in Bach's music.

Bach made a big mark on choral music with works like the St John and St Matthew Passions, over 200 cantatas and the brilliant Magnificat in D. He paired exuberant choral fantasias with meditative hymns, and the beauty and immediacy of his music has inspired composers ever since.

Rutter’s Magnificat shares the buoyant mood and driving rhythms of Bach’s setting, and Mendelssohn’s Elijah is a large-scale concert work modeled on the Passions. In Immortal Bach, Knut Nystedt spins out one of Bach’s chorales into a time-stopping rumination on sound and harmony.

Whether you sing in a local choir, or haven’t sung since school, this is an opportunity to try something new or rediscover your hobby. We’ll be singing from the score – experience reading music and some knowledge of sight-singing will help! The day will be accompanied by piano.

Please choose your vocal part type when booking. Spectator tickets can be purchased for the final run through at the end of the day. Price includes music hire.

The day is expected to finish around 4.30pm
