Romeo & Juliet

London Symphony Orchestra/Michael Tilson Thomas

Tilson Thomas: 50th Anniversary

Michael Tilson Thomas celebrates a 50-year collaboration with the London Symphony Orchestra, which has taken him from his debut in his twenties to Principal Conductor and now Conductor Laureate.

Michael Tilson Thomas – or MTT, as he is affectionately known to many of those he works with – first conducted the LSO when he was 25. It marked the start of a collaboration that he describes as ‘one of the great joys of my life’ – one that saw him become Principal Conductor, lead the Orchestra on tours of Europe, Japan and the US, make numerous recordings, and conduct the LSO at Buckingham Palace in the presence of Her Majesty The Queen.

In this concert, a celebration of an ever-deepening 50-year relationship, MTT presents Berlioz’s retelling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, a groundbreaking take on the playwright’s bittersweet tragedy, which combines the musical drama of a symphony with the theatricality of solo voices and chorus.
