The Rite of Spring

Los Angeles Philharmonic/Dudamel

Yuja Wang playing pinao

Dudamel, Yuja Wang, the Rite of Spring and a John Adams premiere – a concert that positively shouts energy, colour and joy.

‘You can’t accuse the Los Angeles Philharmonic of underselling itself’ wrote The Guardian during the LA Phil’s 2018 Barbican residency – and when you put Gustavo Dudamel on stage with Yuja Wang, it’s pretty much a given that sparks are going to fly.

The first London performance of John Adams’s devilish new piano concerto would make news in its own right: but tonight it’ll make for a high-octane launch to Wang’s season-long Barbican Artist Spotlight. And if, after that, the roof is still in place, Dudamel’s Rite of Spring should lift it right off. But first comes a real rediscovery: an orchestral work by Ginastera that’s effectively a mini-concerto for a virtuoso orchestra.

This performance will end at approximately 9.25pm, including a 20 minute interval.

‘[The LA Phil] presents a greater sense of the diversity of today’s music and its creators than any other orchestra. ‘
