Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic finish their Barbican residency with two epic visions of nature.

The LA Phil’s annual Barbican residencies have become a regular highlight of London’s musical year, and under Gustavo Dudamel they repeatedly surprise and astonish. Tonight they focus all their virtuosity and verve on two radically different – but equally stunning – musical landscapes.

Some would say that Bruckner’s ‘Romantic’ symphony is his most beautiful – and with its breathless vistas and thunderstorm climaxes, it’ll be fascinating to hear Dudamel charge it with his own inimitable life-force. As for Andrew Norman’s Sustain: well, it’s practically a symphony in its own right – an orchestral mediation on humanity’s relationship to nature. ‘The effect’ wrote the New York Times after its premiere in 2018, ‘was sublime’.
