Sunlight, shadows, and evening songs as Sir András Schiff reaches the end of his Beethoven Piano Concerto cycle with the Budapest Festival Orchestra.

If Beethoven’s Second Piano Concerto is his wittiest, the Third has surely got to be his most personal – dark emotions transfigured into glittering keyboard poetry. It’s a noble conclusion to this anniversary cycle from an artist who understands Beethoven like few living pianists.

And with him every note of the way will be Iván Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra. Their collective virtuosity goes without saying; but every one of the BFO’s members plays like a soloist in their own right. Expect real enchantment in tonight’s selection of Dvorak rarities – and when they accompany Schiff, it’ll be chamber music on the most magnificent scale.
