Harlan County USA (15*)

Part of: Collective Visions season

A still from Barbara Kopple's Harlan County

Barbara Kopple’s Oscar Winning documentary is an urgent exploration on the power of unions and their battles against authority.

The film follows the Brookside Strike that took place in rural Kentucky in 1973, caused by miners demanding better working conditions and fair wages refused by their bosses - The Duke Power Company.

Spending several years with the miners and their partners, who played an equal role in protesting, Kopple creates an intimate and direct document of the strike that is shaped and driven by the union’s resistance, with their perspective and actions at the heart of the narrative.
