Distant Voices, Still Lives

Through a unique blend of social realism and musical, Terence Davies tells the semi-autobiographical story of a Liverpudlian family during and after the Second World War. 

Thirty years after its initial release, one of the most acclaimed films in British cinema history returns to the big screen in a new restoration by the BFI National Archive from the original camera negative.

Terence Davies’ partly autobiographical tale evokes his upbringing in Liverpool after the war in a working-class home dominated by the violence of his father, fearsomely played by then newcomer Pete Postlethwaite.

Now that Eileen, Maisie and Tony are adults, their childhood memories – and in particular those associated with their father – are inconsistent. While Eileen clings to happier times, her siblings remember his brutal and violent nature, which has been a major influence on their growth and development. This troubled family must deal with the day-to-day alongside their past.
