Esa-Pekka Salonen orchestral music

BBC SO Total Immersion: Esa-Pekka Salonen

Picture of Sakari Oramo conducting

A rich survey of Salonen’s music with orchestra including the thrilling Wing on Wing inspired by the striking architecture of LA’s Disney Hall.

Finn on Finn perhaps! A Finnish conductor and two Finnish singers treat us to music by the Finn, Esa-Pekka Salonen in this climax of the Total Immersion weekend. Sisters Anu and Piia Komsi sang in the 2004 world premiere of Wing on Wing, a work inspired by architect Frank Gehry’s Walt Disney Hall in Los Angeles (and using taped samples of Gehry’s voice). Gambit from 1998 makes a powerful opener, a virtuoso overture. Mimo II (1992) for oboe and orchestra is a kind of super-theme-and-variations while the choral Karawane from 2014, setting a poem by the German Dadaist poet Hugo Ball, brings the story almost up to date.
