With the arrival of composers, musicians and new instruments from Europe, London’s musical world changed. Tonight we hear music by two of the most influential but contrasting characters on the scene.

Perhaps the most famous visitor was 'Papa' Haydn, a devout Catholic, who penned 12 'London' symphonies, two of which we hear in this concert. Jan Ladislav Dussek was another international visitor to the capital at the time. Rumoured to have been a revolutionary and seducer of princesses, he charged extortionate rates for piano lessons then fled London when his music publishing business failed, abandoning his wife and daughter, and eventually drinking himself to death.
