For Ahkeem (12A*)

Part of: Chronic Youth Film Festival

A still from the documentary For Akheem

For Ahkeem chronicles the life of seventeen-year-old Daje Shelton on the brink of adulthood.

Filming at a time of political upheaval in the state of St Louis, Missouri, American directing duo Jeremy S Levine and Landon van Soest provide a counter-balance to the buried essence of black girlhood.

The film raises important questions on race, class and the iniquities of the educational and criminal justice systems for people of colour in the United States. Blending and transcending genres, this film finds bittersweet optimism within straitened horizons.
