Sounds and Visions Session Five

Ex-Eye + Caterina Barbieri

Caterina Barbieri

Sensuous minimalism gives way to total maximalism in this double bill, bringing together the synth of Caterina Barbieri with the avant-Metal of Ex Eye, saxophonist Colin Stetson’s new project.

Meeting at the crossroads between Metal and Jazz, Ex Eye unites Stetson with drummer and regular collaborator Greg Fox (Liturgy), multi-instrumentalist Shazad Ismaily and guitarist Toby Summerfield. Together, they make music of extremes, Stetson’s baritone sax a muscular central pole around which knotty riffs, throbbing drones and incessant drums spin, creating a feverish and almost euphoric noise.

Caterina Barbieri’s set is a different proposition entirely. The Italian-born, Berlin-based composer draws from diverse influences, including Kosmische, classical Minimalism and medieval lute music, creating a layered, slowly-shifting and totally mesmerising type of synthesizer music.
